The Morgan Motor Company was founded in 1910 and builds vehicles by hand. In the beginning, they produced modern cars, because all cars were modern in the beginning. As time went on, they specialized in building modern cars that looked retro. The small company still only produces around 850 cars a year. In 2005, the company didn't have a designer, a fact that took automotive design student Matthew Humphries by surprise when he applied for an internship at Morgan. The company was impressed by Humphries' portfolio and gave him a job for the summer.
The result of the internship was the gorgeous Areomax, shown above, designed as a commission from Prince Eric Sturdza of Romania. But Humphries' experience with a crew that had never built a car from a designer's render was a roller coaster. The summer started out with engineers giving the student wolf whistles because of his long hair, and ended with Morgan begging him to come back during the school year to guide their Aeromax project. The story of how the Aeromax was brought to life is as entertaining as it is enlightening, and you can read it at Ars Technica.
